Kitaaa Kitaaa Kitaaaaa!

Well, I've been waiting since March 5, 2005 for K-F to get to this one.

*the following contains some very mild spoilers*

Why I think this is the best One Piece Movie ever in the history of the universe: Toei apparently lost their cookie cutter, got completely confused and hired Mamoru Hosoda to direct this movie. And right from the beginning we're rewarded with REAL MOVIE OPENING TITLES/CREDITS, and beautiful ones at that. This movie easily also has the funniest gags. I love it when Sanji looks into the camera. And check out the bit where the everyone's close to the camera except Robin way in the back, then one second later she's slowly peering behind Nami in the foreground. It's easy to miss but hilarious if you catch it.

Then you have the amazing animation which, I know, a lot of people don't like, but there's more expression in the faces and complex movement in the action than in any other movie, or all of them combined, for that matter. The crazy dodges from Zoro during the Gondola race is a good example. The backgrounds are beautiful too. And the absence of shading didn't bother me at all, although I can see how some people would be put off by it.

You got kids in the story actually kinda acting like real kids and actually voiced by REAL KIDS with a whole, good ol' fashioned nuclear family for once in One Piece. Just when you thought everyone in the world of OP were orphans. I like all the outfits the crew gets to wear too. Zoro's pimped out and Usopp actually looks really cool. Then they give us an interesting villain, also unusual for a OP movie which brings us to the dark side of the story. Pretty dark and surprisingly brutal. Really intense.

All of the characters get a chance to participate too. Everyone has their own part to play rather than just being extras like in some other movies or being predictably squared off with the usual sub-bosses.

Kouhei Tanaka did an amazing job on the soundtrack. Very original stuff that draws inspiration from a lot of varied sources. The end theme by Kishidan rocks. They're my favorite Japanese band, so when I first heard they were doing it, I was pretty happy. It's a fun song and it matches the mood of the first half of the movie very well. By the way, lead singer Show Ayanocozey does the voice of Kotetsu, the cook.

The only thing that bothered me were all the open handed slaps. I mean, whoever wrote all of that into the movie almost has a fetish for it, I think.

After waiting for so long and wading through half a filler arc... I just saw the front page and read aloud
"The dramatic, dynamic, and polarizing One Piece Movie 6! YEEE!!!"
... I probably shouldn't have had my window open when I yelled that.
Nevertheless, with all the cool stuff today you guys just redefined the word Awesome! Keep up the already excelling work!!!!!!
